Tris buffers are especially sensitive to temperature which can result in the same buffer giving a slightly different pH at different temperatures. Phosphate buffers are particularly susceptible to bacterial contamination if stored for long periods of time (although this can be avoided by including a low concentration of sodium azide as a preservative). Some buffer components (e.g. EDTA) may give high absorbance readings which can affect detection during processes such as chromatography.
