n the previous chapter, you learned how to put various objects in your scene. In this chapter, you will learn how to make them look like more than nonfeatured bits of white plastic. The secret is the material, a term that, at its most basic, means how your objects reflect light when rendered. As you will discover, in practice it actually means much more than that: so much more that I gave it its own chapter. Materials are, as mentioned, simply a definition of how an object assigned that material will reflect incident light. As you might expect, this implies a dependency on the characteristics of the incident light. Spotlights will interact with materials differently than will point lights, and both interact differently than directional lights. These types of lighting sources are understood rather well from a physical aspect, and modeling them in a 3D renderer follows several well-defined rules.

Figure 4-5 shows the form that lets you map the parameters of the sproc to the properties of the class. In this window, the sproc parameters are considered method parameters because LTS has already generated the code in the DataContext class to represent this sproc. In addition, the default behavior of LTS is to use the runtime for CUD, but in Figure 4-6 you can see that you have the ability to change and override the behavior, class, and method, and you can also override the default mapping.

After a few seconds, you should be notified that the phone was successfully registered. At this point you are finally ready to begin working with your phone in Visual Studio. These steps only need to be performed once for each device that you use.

Now we are ready to deploy our project to the device from inside Visual Studio. First, with the Zune software running in the background on your PC, connect your device to the PC and ensure that it is recognized by Windows. Once everything is ready, choose to deploy your application to the device rather than the emulator. This is done by dropping down the Device combo box in the toolbar and selecting Windows Phone 7 Device, as shown in Figure 1 10. When you next start your program, Visual Studio will connect to the device and then install and launch the application executable.

Note In Ogre, the material defines how your object reflects the light, but not how that reflected light interacts with other objects in your scene. In other words, your objects do not actually become additional lighting sources in the scene as they reflect and/or emit light. This is often referred to as global illumination and is the domain of raytracing, radiosity, and a host of other computationally complex lighting models that may or may not be suitable for real-time 3D rendering. While global illumination lighting models can produce some incredibly realistic scene lighting, they nearly always are unsuitable for calculation of a complex dynamic scene in a 33-millisecond time window (33 milliseconds corresponds to 30 frames per second, a typical minimum target for interactive 3D applications). For this reason, they most often are features of offline photo-realistic rendering applications such as Pixar s RenderMan (http://www.pixar.com), mental ray (http://www.mentalimages.com, included with many commercial 3D modeling tools such as 3D Studio Max), POV-Ray (http://www.povray.org, an open source raytracing renderer), and Aqsis (http:// www.aqsis.org, a freely available open source RenderMan-compliant offline renderer).

Using the newly mapped sproc is actually easier than using the Get sprocs that you learned earlier in this chapter. Unlike the Get sprocs, all the plumbing code is ready for you after you finish the mapping in the UI for the CUD sprocs. What this means is that you can use the exact same LINQ code with your CUD sprocs as you would with dynamic SQL. For example, you could write something like Listing 4-13 to update the Department table with the new sproc that you wrote in Listing 4-12. Listing 4-13. NOTE For deployment to succeed, the phone must be switched on, and the lock screen must not be displayed. If these conditions are not met, a deployment error will occur, although Visual Studio usually provides good feedback about what the problem is to help you figure out how to proceed.
